Super Mario 64: a fan releases a PC porting playable in 8K and 16: 9

A modder has made an incredible port of Super Mario 64 for PC, with support for DirectX 12. Players will be able to rediscover this masterpiece with 8K resolution and 16: 9 format, at least until Nintendo takes action

Among the now numerous games dedicated to the jumping plumber, Super Mario 64 is undoubtedly one of the most loved by fans. The platform, originally launched on Nintendo 64 , has been the protagonist of countless mods and emulations that have allowed younger players to discover this pearl, perhaps playing on a less antiquated system.

This time, the last recovery operation consists of a real PC port , natively playable in 8K resolution and even in widescreen mode ( 16: 9 ).

Super Mario 64 lands on PC with amazing porting

Last weekend, the Unreal user shared a 4K video on YouTube extracted from the aforementioned port of Super Mario 64 , a port that - apparently - would have even been published online. The first footage was removed from YouTube, but Unreal would have already released another clip of the game, this time in 8K.

As stated by the modder himself, the development was inaugurated in 2019 through a sophisticated reverse engineering work that allowed the author to implement support for  DirectX 12 and, therefore, to play the game natively on PC . In this way it was possible to reach 4K  and 8K resolutions and to guarantee support for 16: 9 format .

The anonymous developer is keen to point out that although the game is downloadable online, it will not provide the link to access the download. A more understandable choice since the author, who would have laundered the same assets as the original game, would risk clashing directly with Nintendo for copyright infringement . We remember, after all, that the Kyoto house is rather severe in terms of the treatment of its intellectual properties.

Will Nintendo re-launch Super Mario 64 on Switch?

Coincidentally, Nintendo itself intended to reveal a potential Super Mario 64 remaster The renewed version of the title launched in 1996 could land on Switch this year , together with the remastered editions of Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy - all to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the historic franchise.

According to rumors, the announcement was scheduled for E3 2020 in Los Angeles, an event now canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before being able to surprise the public with any announcements, however, Nintendo will have to deal with a somewhat delicate matter.

Due to a new hacker attack , over two terabytes of data have recently been released online, many of them related to Wii; in fact the console source code has been leaked, as well as all the material related to its development. The stolen data also includes information on other Nintendo platforms - such as GameCube - and the productions of GameFreak, the team responsible for the Pokémon series.
The company would have already started the investigation, so we will carefully follow the whole story.
