Wiko View 4, cheap and with a monstrous battery life!

If we ask a not particularly demanding public what are the characteristics of the next smartphone to buy, the answer will probably be: "Low price and autonomy at high levels". These are precisely the peculiar characteristics of Wiko View 4 , and we can anticipate you - after having tried the smartphone for a few days - that the French company has hit the mark.

Technical specifications

Wiko View 4 is not a smartphone for everyone, that's clear. The most savvy user will be looking for a device with more refined hardware and a more refined photographic sector, however the device of the French - at a price below € 150 - can certainly have its say. The smartphone uses a 6.52-inch display with HD + resolution , precisely 1600x720 pixels with a 20: 9 format and a density of 269ppi. To move it all we find a Helio A25 processor with 8 Cortex-A53 cores of which four at 1.8GHz and the other four at 1.4GHz.

Certainly not very powerful hardware is combined with 3GB of RAM , satisfactory for basic multi-tasking, and 64GB of local storage space . Storage is abundant when you consider the smartphone market segment, and in addition it can be expanded through a microSD. Wiko View 4 is a Dual-SIM (accepts cards in the Nano format) and supports the latest Bluetooth 5.0 protocol. On the connectivity side we have some shortcomings, such as the absence of NFC and support for the 5GHz frequency for Wi-Fi.

Another absence of View 4 is the fingerprint sensor: for issues probably related to production costs, Wiko has chosen not to implement fingerprint scanning, not even on the rear scanner, while for authentication you can use the - less reliable - two-dimensional face recognition. Another questionable choice is that of the micro-USB connector , where all - or almost - competitors use the latest USB Type-C standard.

The shortcomings of Wiko View 4 are however justified by the price and, to an even greater extent, by the presence of a 5000mAh battery . This is a very interesting feature in this price range because the high amperage is combined with low-consumption hardware which promises a significant battery life. All inserted in an 8.8mm thick casing, for a product that weighs 180 grams : not too many if we consider the size of the battery alone. As per tradition for Wiko, moreover, the design is very accurate.

Without infamy or praise the photographic sector, like other models in the same price range: three rear modules, with the main 13 Mpixel and an ultra wide angle 5 Mpixel module, combined with a 2 Mpixel depth module. On the front, embedded in a central drop notch, an 8 Mpixel camera is instead incorporated. In this analysis, we focused on performance and autonomy, not so much on the camera, which in any case is of discreet quality, especially during the day, in line with other proposals of the same price.

There are others, however, the real highlights of the new device of the French: in addition to the battery and the hardware in consumption, Wiko View 4 offers a little personalized software and close enough to the stylistic and functional dictates of Android 10 in stock version . We have little bloatware and only a few additions, with sober and effective graphics. The price is undoubtedly very interesting : the price list is 149 € ,

Technical analysis

Let's go into the heart of our technical analysis: the integrated processor is a MediaTek Helio A25 , also known with the code MT6762D . It is an entry-level processor that operates at a maximum of 1.8GHz for the four "big" cores, designed more for energy saving than for brute performance. It is printed at 12-nm with TSMC's FinFET process and supports 4G LTE networks.

The experience of using the smartphone is good: some sporadic micro-lag is present, but it does not compromise the usability of essential contents such as web browsing, consultation of e-mails and multimedia reproduction of HD content. It also helps having chosen a non-invasive and non-impacting graphic customization in terms of performance : View 4 is a smartphone that can be used without too many compromises, despite the low-power hardware.

Display

The Wiko View 4 panel is a 6.52-inch IPS LCD, quite large and with a 20: 9 ratio particularly interesting for different types of content. The resolution only HD is satisfactory in our opinion, not to cause too many compromises during daily use: just think that iPhone 11 has a density of 326ppi, while the French device for only 150 euros stops at just under 390 ppi.

Leaving aside the numerical considerations, however, the Wiko View 4 display is of low quality. It covers in an optimal way the sRGB reference triangle, with inaccurate colors and a more than satisfactory white balance, while the gamma curve is correctly set to about 2.2, a reference value for the sRGB standard. We also measured a maximum luminance of 556cd / m², a decidedly interesting value considering the market range of View 4 and also considering the measured contrast ratio of 1512: 1.
What do all these measures mean, especially in the eyes of an inexperienced user? That Wiko View 4 is certainly not a smartphone designed for photographers or creatives. The high maximum luminance means that it can be used well in any circumstance, even under sunlight thanks also to the excellent contrast ratio. These are the things a € 150 smartphone needs, certainly not the perfect coverage of the reference gamuts or the absolute color fidelity.

Autonomy

The autonomy of Wiko View 4 is its strong point, without too many discussions. We have already seen many smartphones with 5000mAh batteries or more, but none with such thrifty hardware. We recently saw Motorola moto g8 Power which, with its 5000mAh battery, managed to get more than 23 hours of autonomy in our test, but View 4 manages to do more.

With 26 hours and 30 minutes , Wiko View 4 was the smartphone to obtain the highest score in our test (made with an automated script that simulates browsing on a web browser, after setting the brightness to a value of 200cd / m²). Unlike the moto g8 Power, however, we do not have fast charging and the procedure through the integrated micro-USB connector is rather slow.

However, it must be said that Wiko View 4 can last between one and the other even 2 or 3 days with a not really moderate use, therefore the problem of the absence of the rapid recharge can be circumvented with a possible night charge only when needed .

Final thoughts

Wiko View 4 is a device designed for those who use the smartphone massively, especially with basic tasks. It is excellent for web browsing, consulting apps or e-mails and, thanks to the bright display, it can also give some satisfaction with viewing content. Battery is clearly its strong point : if you are looking for a cheap smartphone with monstrous autonomy, Wiko View 4 can be the smartphone for you.

The flaws are there, and they should not be underestimated: there is no NFC, there is no support for dual-band Wi-Fi and for unlocking there is only facial recognition. In addition, the performance is not the best (forget to play Fortnite, for example), just as the display is not to be taken into consideration for serious photo editing. But it is clear that these are not the intended uses of this smartphone: in short, if autonomy is everything for you and you have a budget of 150 € there is currently nothing comparable to the new device of the French.
